submitted by Hello, time for a sorta review that's kinda angry and not very angry at the same time. Yeehaw. I posted this on the MH rage sub but I was wondering what other people thought on the main sub. It wasn't a very rage filled post either so why not. I'm curious if other people have similar experiences with the MHW story. Also help I don't use Reddit a lot I hope I marked the spoilers right.
MHW was my first monster hunter, my brother on the other hand, played Tri. I found monster hunter when I asked someone for music suggestions and they said try monhun soundtrack and I was like. OK, and promptly fell in love with the soundtrack (2016). So when I heard that there's an MH coming to PC I was obviously glad. OK MINI RAGE. I remember talking to some of my friends classmates when she dragged me as a friend to one of her class outings. I was talking to the assholes which were her classmates and he had a PS4 so he told me. Hah, yeah I beat all the monsters already. And I thought to myself: bro, shut up. I digress.
MHW base game was a thrilling adventure. It's the exact game I wanted. Tight hitboxes relatively, cool combo based combat, very responsive mobility and environment and it looked amazing. (After playing assassin's creed black flag and la Noire, boy was I in need of some tight walking controls like Dishonored). The monsters were like fun mini bosses with some kinda gimmick and the Handler was not grating yet.
Exploring slowly was amazing too, finding the fartlands in coral Highlands, finding some stupid cave in ancient forest. Also having to suffer the ugliness which is the elders recess and its entire soundtrack. On the bright side, I have dodogama.
Whatever, the base experience was well balanced (except that one time I genocided my way through 20+ gold investigations each of odogarons and legianas without 1 gem drop) and the story was serviceable enough. What do you wanna say, we kill monsters for some big ass, reason? No we kill monsters because haha big weapon go brrr.
Witcher quest was fantastic. Would Witcher again. Also I didn't know I needed botanist deep lore in my life and for once Handler actually acknowledged that our hunter was a badass.
Finally, after 200- 250/300 hours, I got myself Iceborne and was ready to sink my teeth in. The soundtrack for Hoarfrost is a banger, Seliana is beautiful, Hoarfrost is amazing looking and the monsters are badass. But the story made me want to rip my eyes out. It had a YEAH GIRL POWER vibe I hated and I'm a girl. Like bro ok. Why is the handler hogging the spotlight in this story I literally don't care. They focused on the Handler and the other person what's her face, the Tracker and her grandfather which was SUPER SHOEHORNED IN. Like I get it, but didn't you say you came here to eat shit?
STORY (idk how to format)
Let's see if I can put my thoughts down without editing. First of all, I don't care about the handler although I appreciate her. After seeing the Fatalis cutscene, boy I wish she was like that more often instead. That was BADASS. But let's begin with the Beotodus quest. OH THE FISH BOY QUEST.
Us: in new region
Handler: I'm just gonna run first
Me: why on... Get back here.
And she promptly gets jumped by fish man. After that we have this whole forgettable slew of camp setting upping I don't care about. Blah blah there's this thing her grandfather gave her, Tracker knows about it as well. We get a tonne of Tracker Handler cutscenes where they bond like two bricks. Then promptly leave to investigate, leaving my character to just have to accept her wish to leave and make serious handler have more things to do. I get your grandpa's legacy nonsense, but really. REALLY? It's pointless. When we realise Velkhana is a literal pushover, it's like... Wow... This was... This was a pointless plot point, huh. They just wasted my time here. I would be way more down if the clue was to Shara, even then, it's still super annoying that my character doesn't get screentime EVEN IF HE DOESN'T HAVE A STORY.
Ok disclaimer, I did enjoy the buildup to Velkhana gameplay, monster progression and area wise, just the plot part of it was painful. Just painful. Also did you know how salty I was when my hunter got destroyed by the Velkhana crystals JUST BECAUSE HANDLER WANTED IN ON IT. And there was no cutscene later on where people say, hey are you ok? Or I'm sorry. Just boom, council table, get back to work Sapphire star. Hah, you think we really treat you like some hero, no go get your ass carted out there, bye.
Then we get more Tracker Handler stuff where the Tracker actually treats you like shit when you do most of the work to save her. She always treats your character with this aloof, untrusting and disrespectful way. It's infuriating. Meanwhile Handler and Tracker just being in the spotlight and having some "emotional connection"... I still haven't forgiven my Palico for hugging Handler first. Dammit Percival, you traitor.
It's just so annoying, hello, I understand my main character doesn't have much to develop on, but can we not ignore that those two seem so disjointed from all the other characters. Furthermore, everyone else is tossed aside???
These characters keep getting pushed to the front. Even the base game, her cutscene with Third fleet captain was kinda... ????? I want more Third fleet captain NGL.
Even at the end, these two's emotions tended to take up most of the story's breathing room and was awful, just terrible. It isn't worth the time and terribly written. Can I have SOMETHING about my character or at least have some decently written girls, by God, these games can't write a woman to save their lives. They're either dumb optimist annoyance or asshole.
Why can't we have more serious handler? Her expressions when your character reacts to the food is so precious. She looks so doubtful but when your character seems happy she does the smallest celebration. And she does the job and seems to have this controlled yet slightly playful aura. I also kinda missed Excitable A Lister and Field team leader. They all seem like optimistic greenhorns that really deserve some level of development or at least the basest level of reaction. I really really felt bad when I saw the Fatalis thing where A Lister got deleted and that one time where the Huntsman got yeeted and the Field Team leader lost his cool. No? No development? Just a quick shut up from the commander and back to work I guess. Also damn, where's the Huntsman HE'S AN INTERESTING CHARACTER??? He vanished after getting smacked by Velk.
Any character that's not the few that are pushed to the front are the most interesting characters because THEY JUST DO THEIR JOB. They have faith, even thought they're not really the best, and manage to overcome the odds and themselves... Quietly. So much potential in those characters and nope. Just NADA, we get two very boring characters and other people just exist I guess.
I appreciated the quiet respect from the other characters and not the over the top stuff that Handler says. Commander treats you with like a tough dad level of respect. The admiral is just... a poopoohead, but hes a funny one. Egghead, never forgetting that + how much the game tries to make you aware that he looks like Rajang.
All in all, as much as I'm annoyed by the Handler, she's still my handler and I do like her to some extent. She's cute and she does her job, but she needs to leave my character alone/ encourage him in a not annoying way. But Tracker, on the other hand, no. Just no. At least she eases up on you when you talk to her after Shara.
I don't expect Monhun to have a groundbreaking story. But they tried some story and it fell flat for me, I'm way more interested in the other characters that got sidelined, hard. Dude I KEEP THINKING ABOUT THEIR POTENTIAL AND AS A STORY WRITER, I'M FEELING SO MUCH PAIN.
GAMEPLAY
The feeling was apparent from the beginning, Beotodus was a damage sponge. But I was fine with it, more difficulty is fun right? ITS FUN RIGHT? It was fine fine fine, until the damage sponge nature and bullshit sword bounce nature and absolutely cracked out attack patterns started hitting.
It's not hard... It's just tedious, is what I feel about Iceborne. Skip this segment if you don't wanna read my individual monster thoughts
Beotodus, eh, easy, kinda fun, I like that dive into long jump attack it has.
Banbaro, get away from me, you absolute damage sponge tree grabbing pest.
Viper Tobi, eh just use antidote 3.
Nightshade, just as annoying as base game but damage sponge and I hate it. Stupid spammer.
Coral Pukei Pukei, my baby. My absolute baby but it's meh in terms of the fight.
Barioth, please stop spamming, I took 40 minutes on my first hunt. But in the end, barioth is actually pretty easy and predictable.
Narga, I can't be bothered but kinda fun as I progressed further into the game.
Glavenus, I WAS SO HYPED, but he's a pushover. Except that one jump bug when you bring your Palico.
Tigrex, easy, but as I progressed, changed weapons and styles it got ANNOYING. What do u mean I can't roll under the monster, it's my favourite dodge tactic.
Brachydios, pretty pushover when I first fought it but it slowly became one of my most hated monsters, which I'll come to later.
Rathalos, I hate you, come down here coward
Azure, you're the superior rathalos, fun to fight
Any rathian, well, you exist.
Shrieking, please come down here, coward, I'll shoot shit at your friend but pushover
Fulgur, exists I guess
Acidic glavenus, manly glavenus, much respect
Ebony, whatever I guess, just dodge, pupper on crack
Velkhana, kinda pushover??? Idk but I'll come back to her later.
Seething also pushover, fun to dodge between its legs. Its supernova is also very very easy to dodge.
Black veil, after 7 carts, I can say I know Blackveil very well now, and love SOSing this monster with Teo Hunting horn
Nami, I love you sm, best boy
Ruiner, fun bro I guess
Kirin, who loved you?
Shara, fun as well, very predictable but fun
Yian, I love you rathian on crack
Zin, whatever I guess, pretty ok fight
Rajang, easy until the last phase before capture where I get eaten alive on Insect Glaive. But FUN.
Gold rath and silver rath, I hate both of you, actually. Spamming damage sponges
Safi, this is honestly boring at this point
Alatreon, I don't like you but I also like you _-------------
My problem with Iceborne is the monsters both have insane health, annoying barriers like sword bounce and head attack spam, as well as weapons being kinda... Hmm.
Most monsters spam and have insane health pools, so it's just busy work, hunts take a decently long period of time, monsters are more noodley and spam a TONNE, all have some sort of bullshit move now. Also I hate Kirin. Join me in the Kirin hating fanclub.
My main main anger is something I call, the floor is lava. A lot of monsters have this type of attack, but to varying degrees. Brachydios, Velkhana, Blackveil, Bazelguese, Namielle to name the more prominent ones. I categorised it into multiple levels. The floor is a constant or activatable hazard, the floor is sometimes a hazard. My classification is debatable, very debatable, but I'll explain some.
Sometimes we have: Velk and Bazel
Constant or activatable: Nami, Brachydios
Is just an AOE hazard: Blackveil
I hate brachy, but love Nami? Why? I classify them similarly. Like I said I used to kill brachy easily, but now it's just an annoyance. One reason is more psychological than anything. Brachy feels random compared to Nami and the affected area for brachy is always a randomly placeable ticking time bomb. Brachy can put like a billion slime puddles, all ticking down at different times, unintentionally (or slightly intentionally but not as much as Nami) and leave it to just blow up and sometimes you just get caught in some random situation where there's a bunch of random slime puddles everywhere, all at different stages. While brachy teleports behind you and ends your life. Meanwhile Nami feels calculated, it feels like the monster is actually trapping you. The water( aka lava) is not always dangerous when activated but brings you into vulnerable states and I think it's very cool. Not everything has to explode or damage when activated. It's refreshing, fun. And the monster feels intelligent. Not haha slime everywhere randomly exploding, don't you love difficulty through spam and random everything explodes now (TELEPORTS BEHIND YOU)
I have my qualms about Velk and the random mist clouds, but whatever. Blackveil is easy once you get the rhythm too.
I get difficulty, but the turning speed on the monsters is wild too, but not something I can't deal with.
Finally, I'm stuck on Alatreon rn, I'm not so mad, I don't think Ala is unbeatable at all. I think its patterns are easy to read and I can dodge most of them quite well. It's just I've begun hating solo hunting. I soloed all the way to ruiner and just gave up. Soloing is no longer fun with all the damage soakers everywhere. So I do Ala with randos and boy howdy it is TOUGH to get places. I mean I'm not that good at the game so I do die a lot, but sometimes my teammates just all perish too and I'm just standing there in EJ just looking at Ala knowing I'm gonna die. Wish me luck boys, I've been at Ala for a few weeks lmao. Yeah I'm still stuck.
I still love MHW and am just crying about Rise because I don't have a switch. I love the world and I love the gameplay, it's just some things really GRATE. Like seriously. I want to love this game completely, and the rabid artist in me wants to make stories about the game, but I try not to, because well, the game is the game. It's good. I can't take that away from it, not in the slightest. I'm able to rant for hours about the story and my frustrations about the game, but this is all I can type because my fingers are numb. I don't get mad at games, I just don't, my solution is to keep trying, but I'm finding it hard to do that anymore.
submitted by A late Happy New Year to everyone, hope your gaming year has started off well.
I made a list of around 38 games I wish to finish this year, which I'll dump at the end of this progress report. So far, I've managed to complete 13 from the list and 16 games in total for January. Don't mind me, I never keep this pace, January is always a spike month as it's just off the holiday sales and I have nothing better to do than game. >_>
Before I go through the progress I just want to point out a potential winner of 2020's Worst Developer of the Year Award - I know it's only January, but yes, some developers are daft enough to try and win this straight away;
Here's the unlucky candidate:
Yippee! Entertainment / Pyro Studios (Publisher: Kalypso Media) Game: Commandos 2 Remaster I have the original Commandos games, they're tough and good fun. They take place in WW2 following the Commando units that were deployed behind enemy lines to do sabotage and infiltration missions. A remaster of this classic sounds like a great idea, but then this developer (or publisher whatever) decided the best thing to do for 'sales' purposes is to censor the game.
I'm not joking. They removed all Nazi imagery and have done the same with the Japanese forces (Rising Sun emblem), choosing to blame 'national laws of various countries'. Their excuse is that producing uncensored and censored versions would hit their bottom line, and 'split' the player base, which is hilarious considering they've removed the co-op mode from the game.
The dev has doubled down on this on various forums, I'm just saying, if you're remastering a game, please don't censor it, especially not if it's a WW2 game and you're censoring the bad guys from it. That's just unbelievably stupid. Predictably, there was a backlash against this decision on the Steam forums and on reddit's gaming subs, so much so, I don't think anyone has even defended their choice, and that to me, suggests that the devs/publishers have dropped an almighty clanger here.
Moving on to the reviews, here's my review system that I started last year, stolen shamelessly from VNDB's rating system:
- Worst Ever
- Awful

- Weak

There is some overlap and I do have my bias, I don't really compare scores across genres, a good game is just that, good for me. :)

- Turn Based Tactics
- 6/10 Decent
A cute indie turn-based tactics game in the vein of Advanced Wars. The game doesn’t really break any new ground for the genre, there are the usual staple of units, infantry, archers, air, naval units and so on. Commanders with their special abilities, it’s all fairly typical of the genre.
There isn’t really that much I can add to it really, for all units across all factions are the same, only differing in art style. In the campaign, the AI is pretty poor. Offence is better than defence, and the only way the AI gets ahead of you is because it is permitted to utilise units that you can’t get your hands on until a few missions later.
The campaign story is standard-fare, an undead invasion, a historical threat to deal with and so on. A common theme is the inability of people cross-faction to talk to each other, in fact, probably a quarter or more of the battles could be avoided if people would try some diplomacy instead of wasting lives thumping each other before clocking on that ‘we come in peace’.
It is a fun game, just don’t look to this one for anything ground-breaking in terms of the mechanics or the campaign. Because of the lack of variety in unit strength, most battles turn out to be dull grinding affairs. As such, by the final act of the campaign I was more than happy to finish the game, skipping some optional missions because it became a chore. Unfortunately, the ‘true ending’ is hidden behind 100 unlockable stars, I got 77 stars from normal play, skipping two optional missions. The game simply wasn’t amazing enough for me to chase after the 100. So, I youtubed the ‘proper’ ending so to speak. Personally, I don’t like games that hide their ending behind gates like this, if normal play leaves you around 20-30 off the mark, then that’s not really conductive to encouraging players to push on and find out your ending. Especially not if your gameplay isn’t that spectacular to begin with.

- Unavowed

- Point and Click Adventure
- 8/10 Very Good
I caught this on Steam, but picked it up using the GamePass. It’s a point and click adventure game that starts with your character possessed by a demon. Sounds interesting enough, so I picked it up.
This is easily one of Wadget Eye Games best titles to date. The Unavowed are a secret group that polices the supernatural forces in the world, protecting the normal humans (the mundane), whilst battling demons, monsters and other spirits.
Your character can have their own unique origin story, which affects the prologue and offers skills you can use throughout the game in dialogue etc. But basically, you run into the Unavowed thanks to your demon-possession episode, and from there, the story kicks off as you and the group chase after your demon and unravel all his plans. It is well written; the story is consistent with a great twist towards the end. The puzzle aspects are sensible and logical, there was only one puzzle that genuinely stumped me due to a lack of hints, otherwise everything was more or less straightforward.
I enjoyed my time here, it’s difficult to review point and click adventure games as a lot rests on the storyline. This storyline is well worth the entry fee, and I feel I ripped the developer’s off by playing this on the Game Pass for £1, though they did tell me they were well compensated for being on GamePass, so there we are. Definitely check this out if you’re a fan of the genre, or you enjoy a good storyline.

- Visual Novel (dubious)
- 5/10 Average
A black and white visual novel, where you play as a taxi driver investigating criminal cases. It’s difficult to nail exactly what it is, but basically you drive around picking up passengers and listening to their life stories whilst you try and find clues for the case that you’re on.
The idea is okay, the conversations can be interesting, but I never quite felt super-engaged about the whole thing. This may have been down to the fact that passengers are mostly just random stories, but also, in the case I took on (there are three you can pick), I felt that all the evidence I picked up really would have been picked up by any half competent police investigation in the first place.
It’s not a bad game though, it’s just, dull I suppose. So, that’s more or less why I’m going with a five, it’s just ‘so-so’.
- Completion 4:
- Omen Exitio: Plague
- PC
- Choose your Own Adventure
- 4/10 Weak
I like Choose your own adventure novels (CYOA), but I think in the modern day it is perhaps better to go for a visual novel or an adventure game. But of course, going for a CYOA is a cost-saving measure, you just need to make sure that the writing is superb and hope the reader has the imagination to match.
Omen Exitio is not superb. There is too much telling you how you feel, too many unnecessarily flat descriptions. Rather than back and forth conversations, things are fairly short and to the point. The result is that it is almost impossible to build a connection with the cast, which also goes for quantity over quality. The uninspired writing can be seen in the romance options, you pretty much meet a girl and bump uglies within minutes, there’s no build up or genuine pay off.
Throughout the game you build your character’s skills and use those skills to garner more experience to invest in those skills. There’s a snowball effect here, it is always more beneficial to use skill checks, since it gives you additional exp to pump into skills.
But anyway, that’s not enough to make the product stand out, unfortunately, I can’t recommend the story, which typically with indie games, is a HP Lovecraft Cthulu inspired story. The thing is, if you’re going to sell me fear and paranoia, then the writing has to be exceptional, and this comes nowhere near, it is fairly generic, and indie Cthulu freakshow games are a dime a dozen these days that I’m starting to think I should write off these types of games, as the talent pool simply isn’t there to knock the themes to the boundary line never mind out of the park.
- Completion 5:
- Mario and Rabbids: Kingdom Battles
- Nintendo Switch
- Turn Based Tactics
- 9/10 Excellent
Cross Firaxis’ XCOM with Mario and you have this utterly ridiculous, but amazing game. It’s Mario, it’s the Mushroom Kingdom, and it is an X-COM like.
Turn based battles involving cover, pot-shots from across the map, overwatch, grenades, melee attacks and combination jumps. It is as silly as it sounds, but it works marvellously because the game has been polished extremely well.
Basically, the story goes that the rabbids (mindless rabbits) crash into the real world and mess about with a pair of goggles that can merge two items together into a combination. Of course, things go wrong, the rabbids get teleported to the Mushroom Kingdom and that Kingdom gets ruined by both the rabbids and the hybrids the machine creates. Two early creations are a Rabbid Luigi and a Rabbid Princess Peach. They’re your two early teammates alongside the leader Mario, who is pretty much a solid all-rounder. You get to recruit the rest of the cast at various points in the game, Luigi for example, is the equivalent of an XCOM Sniper, and Princess Peach even stars, in gung-ho style, wielding a shotgun and grenades in what has to be the most bombastic entrance I’ve ever seen.
The enemies you face are combined rabbids wreaking havoc over the kingdom. The turn-based battles work well, because skills are varied enough to keep things interesting. There’s also a lot of focus on movement, including movement-based attacks which keeps things mobile. The % hit feature has been toned down from XCOM, you have three hit %’s based on cover. If you flank an enemy or they’re in the open, you hit 100% of the time. If they’re in low cover, it’s a 50-50 shot and if they’re in full cover, you’re going to miss all the time. Having the %’s stick out like this really plays into the tactical aspect of the game, keeping things fun.
Outside of the excellent combat are reasonably easy puzzles that unlock new chests and coins, you need money to buy new weapons to kill the meaner rabbid enemies. This game is such a mish-mash, I cannot believe it actually works so well. The art is colourful, it’s Mario, it’s funny, it’s silly, it’s ridiculous and yet on the other hand, Luigi just sniped a Rabbid with a headshot from a mile away, Princess Peach is kicking arse throwing nades left and right, while her Rabbid version snaps selfies and clings to Mario. It’s so ridiculous, and yet, it’s great fun, easily one of the best games out there for me.

- Overclocked: A History of Violence
- PC
- 3D point and click adventure
- 5/10 Average
This one made me feel old as I saw the release date as 2008 and thought ‘that’s only a few years ago…’ Yikes.
Anyway; you play as a psychiatrist investigating a case of five youths that have all gone cuckoo over the span of a few days. It’s a weird one, the introduction cutscene is quite exciting but the rest of the game is fairly vague, the game throws you straight into the deep end in regards to the case specifics.
This features good dialogue, solid voice acting from what I could hear and a very good accompanying soundtrack. It plays sort of in the vein of Heavy Rain, though there’s not so many puzzles, you’re in New York with pissing down rain and there’s a mystery to solve.
The main focus is very much the storyline, David, the protagonist is a flawed person with marital issues and a history that is wrapped up in solving army PTSD cases, so he comes across as intelligent but fairly emotionally damaged. Whilst the story is atmospheric and fairly interesting, the gameplay is archaic.
You investigate the five patients via questioning and hypnotising them, you have to use visual or audio triggers to get them to remember stuff. That means you have to be savvy on what audio clue to play them at the right time in order to make speedy progress. If you aren’t savvy, then churning through all the audio cues can drag the game down. It is a common complaint in a lot of reviews I read for the game, as such I highly recommend using a guide to be able to avoid such frustration, especially because the story is told backwards going from present day, back further into the past and so can be confusing if you’re wasting time going by trial and error.
It’s a difficult one to rate, so much hinges on the plot really. I don’t think it’s awful by any means, but this is predominantly for story-focused gamers. Unfortunately, I think the ending was a bit of an ambiguous cop-out, it could have ended on a very horrific (in a good way) note, but played things safe. A shame.

- Distrust

- Survival
- 5/10 Average
I’ve yet to find a good survival game really, but this one got my interest as it thematically reminded me of the classic movie; The Thing.
Taking place on an arctic camp is perhaps the only real similarity to the film unfortunately, and the title is fairly misleading as there are no trust mechanics and no reason to distrust anyone in the entire game. I don’t think the developers were stupid here, I think they knew what they were aiming for titling the game as such, but whatever.
The core of the game is you pick two survivors to start with. You then go through zones, each progressively harder until you reach the big bad event in the middle and win the game. In the process, you manage your survival meters (like, one of the shittiest mechanics ever), which would be; warmth, food and sleep. Warmth makes sense in such a freezing cold environment, though it tickles me that an exploration team wasn’t wearing winter-clothing in the first fucking place, even if they crashed a helicopter… You keep warm by getting inside buildings and turning on generators, though fuel is precious obviously.
Food and sleep are also necessary and as usual in these games, you have to eat like a billion tons of food per hour just to keep the meters up and running, or you starve, or you die from a common cold, it’s nonsensical and it’s not enjoyable gameplay IMO.
If you sleep, big bad aliens come out to play, but they’re tame, dull affairs easily dealt with and only really existing as a method of punishing you for needing to nap every two hours. I’ll stop there as I think it’s pretty obvious how much I dislike meter management in survival games at this point.
It took me two plays on the ‘challenge’ mode to win the game and achieve the ‘best’ ending, though I did have the means to unlock the even better secret ending, I elected to forgo it as meter management was off the charts.
It’s an alright game really, but once you’ve played it for five minutes, that’s the loop for the entire game. There’s no great joy to be found here unless you’re a fan of the genre, and it’s a shame as the concept of a survival game based around trust, in the arctic, a la The Thing could have been an exceptional one, but it’s just a typical meter management game IMO.

- The Long Reach
- PC
- Side scrolling point and click horror
- 4/10 Weak
I’m tempted to go 3/10 actually, but I’ll be nice.
The Long Reach is a horror-thriller game, basically a pixel side-scrolling adventure where you go around picking up items and then working out how to use them for puzzles to progress. Sometimes it makes sense, other times it is moon logic. There is a lot of back and forth, which isn’t particularly fun.
Dialogue flip flops between excellent and downright awful, it is like someone trying to be edgy has written half of it. There’s a lot of unnecessary swearing, or just flat unfunny, try-hard dialogue going on. (Like my reviews, first of all, how dare you…)
Where it does excel is in creating a suspenseful and at times horrifying atmosphere. It is just a shame the rest of the game isn’t up to scratch. There’s a demo available, try it, if you find the intro insufferable, it’s not for you. In fact, I think the introduction sequence sums up the full game; Curious going on, a good atmosphere, cringe-dialogue. I wouldn’t recommend it personally, especially not for the retail price it is going for as it can be particularly short, especially for those who know their way around puzzles that crop up in these games. Can’t win them all, I guess.
- Completion 9
- Call of Duty: WW2
- PC
- FPS
- 7/10 Good
I picked this up in one of the HumbleBundles, otherwise I would have swerved it as I’m not a fan of FPS games at the best of times.
What’s to say? It’s Call of Duty. It’s big, it’s loud, it’s brash. There are set pieces, choreographed cinematic moments and lots of gore. In fact, I’m fairly happy they didn’t shy away from the gore in some of the dramatic moments, because I think war games tend to underplay the sheer horror that can be inflicted on people, especially back in the WW2-era. The shooting is okay, I died quite often, which probably says a lot about how my luck would have gone in reality. You can go down in so many ways, a stray shot, an unexpected MG sweep, a plane bomb, it’s nuts.
The story isn’t anything you’ve not seen before though and it is spread across twelve missions, so there’s plenty of shooting to be had here in the single player campaign if that tickles your fancy. I think it’s a good game, but the re-tread of the refrain of a Band of Brothers and a view of the American landings at D-Day again doesn’t exactly refocus the war in a different light. I would have liked to have seen this from other perspectives, and I would have liked the game’s story to push the boat out in some of the questions that were asked. For example, early on there’s a friendly debate going on where some men mock Nazis who had been burnt to death and someone points out that it’s someone’s son who is lying there, who may have been forced into service etc. These moments are far and few between and that’s a bit of a shame.

- Old Man's Journey
- PC
- Puzzle/Adventure
- 5/10 Average
Don’t pay too much heed to the rating there, Old Man’s Journey is a game that does what it says on the tin. It’s more of an art piece than a game though, clocking in at just over an hour and half to complete, you basically follow an old man as he journeys across the map.
In order for him to progress you need to move pieces of land to form a path. That’s basically it. Sometimes you have puzzles involving moving sheep out of the way, sometimes you go down waterfalls, it is simple stuff and that’s ok.
There’s a story here too, told in the form of flashbacks and there’s an ending that may get the bottom lip trembling. It’s okay for what it is, though I’d pick it up on sale if it interests you as I’m not sure it’s worth a fiver.
- Completion 11 (Go away Pahlan! :P)
- Outer Wilds
- PC
- Space Exploration/Mystery
- 8/10 Very Good
Think Subnautica in space and you have a rough idea of the game of Outer Wilds. Taking place in a solar system, you go off and explore, only for everything to be reset within twenty minutes of the game kicking off. That’s intentional apparently, you’re stuck in a time loop and thus can explore things bit by bit in twenty-minute sessions with the event halting your exploration every time, until you can find the solution.
It’s a clever game, like Subnautica, the environs are great to look at and to explore. Chasing the story is good fun, there’s a good mystery within that you can piece together. The downsides are two-fold; Finicky controls that can be a bastard to fight with, especially in Zero-G situations out in space, but secondly the time limit itself. 20 minutes is a fairly tight schedule when you’re rushing to a rocket, to launch and traverse and land in dangerous environments. One such environment that you are encouraged to explore early on is called the Brittle Hollow.
It’s a planet that is getting sucked into a black hole piece by piece, which makes exploring it a real fucking pain in the arse, both because sometimes your path decides to piss off, and because sometimes you can misstep and fall into the bloody thing yourself, thus wasting precious time that you don’t really wish to waste given the time limit.
As such, the time limit can be a huge hindrance, something I regularly butted heads with because a lot of the planetary design requires navigating some form of annoying hazard. If you’re quick and efficient, you could take three locations out in that 20-minute session, but it can lead to feeling rushed when it comes to finding clues, particularly if you hear the death-chime warning that is giving you your final two minutes of life.
Those flaws aside, it is a marvellous adventure, genuinely interesting and well-crafted with some fairly bizarre worlds to explore. One to check out for sure and this could have easily hit a 9/10, so do check it out.
- Completion 12:
- Fire Emblem: Three Houses
- Nintendo Switch
- Turn Based Tactics/Social RPG
- Rating: 8.5, Very Good-Excellent
This is a mammoth game!
Basically, it starts with you, a mysterious young man/lady working your mercenary life before rescuing some students at a prestigious academy run by the national Church. As reward, you’re promoted to professor and have to pick one of the houses to teach throughout the year.
Think of the Persona series and you have an idea of how school life goes, just in the opposite direction as you’re the teacher rather than the student. You have a monthly schedule, where you teach classes and every Sunday is a ‘free day’ where you can explore the monastery building relationships with the students and staff, or go out into the world to do battle with your armies. At the end of every month is your story battle, much like the end of month objectives in Persona 3. (Disclaimer, it isn't exactly like Persona, it just reminds me of it.)
At this prestigious academy, you actually teach war and weapon skills to the students. Each student from the house you elect to teach become your units on the battlefield. Each individual student has their own strengths and weaknesses, thus it is worth being a teacher and identifying a lesson plan for them, so that you can train them to the best of their abilities.
You can poach students from other classes to round out your own class’ weaknesses as well, but that requires building relationships with prospective students. The story is split into two distinct parts;
Part one of the game focuses almost exclusively on Academy life under the auspices of the Church. Part two occurs after a time-skip into the future when your students are all grown up. It’s a pretty neat idea. What adds to the length of the game is that each house has its own students and storyline. Blue Lions for example, all hail from a Kingdom to the north, whilst the Black Eagles hail from the Southern Empire and the Golden Deer are out in the East of the land. Each nation, and thus each class has their own politics and culture to dive into.
Whilst Part 1 of the game is the same across all three houses – bar students and perspective, part 2 is unique across all three houses. And there are FOUR routes to go through to get the full story and experience, ergo; four unique part 2’s to enjoy and three relatively distinct part 1’s to get through.
The game is already massive as it is, with such an array of students, an entire year of teaching to get through, with monthly events and so on. Just one route can easily take 50-60 hours if you dive in and explore at every opportunity. Though you can skip everything, from teaching to the battles themselves, so you could conceivably finish it in 20 hours. So, to get the full experience, this is definitely one for the long haul.
I thoroughly enjoyed the political world presented in Three Houses, I rather enjoyed the colourful cast and character building that was going on, and I loved how relationships impacted off each other and were referenced in various parts of the game. This is certainly a fairly character-driven game, the main story isn’t going to be winning any awards, but it is fairly interesting picking away at the plots and historical events leading up to the present day. I feel, my view of the story may well be even more positive after going through the other routes, as that would shine more light on the hidden machinations going on.
What stops this from getting a full 9/10 or a 10/10?
Well, the battle side of things is cripplingly easy, to such an extent there is zero challenge on normal difficulty. I agree with various commentators that if you’re half decent at games, play this on ‘hard’ mode. Unfortunately, you can’t shift the difficulty up midway through the game, which is a shame and a bit of a weird oversight if I’m honest. But this is at least fixable.
Secondly; loading times are awful… I kind of expect a game exclusive to a console to be somewhat zippy and quick in loading, but this one drags at times. Some areas suffer from frame rate drops, and there are some instances of horrific texture pop-in or portraits taking too long to load.
Thirdly, in some respects, the length of the game plays against it. Depending on the house you pick, you can get zero to a wealth of lore. Most people recommend going through the Blue Lions route first as it feels like traditional Fire Emblem story, but that route is character driven and it doesn’t shine a light on important lore. Ergo, if you want the full lore experience, you’re going to have to revisit the game via the other routes.
That’s a spectacular ask for anyone with a backlog, or anyone who can easily get burnt out by the gameplay loop, especially because, as I note, part 1 is the same across the board just with different story beats and perspectives until you get to part 2. It is a mammoth task that I intend to complete at some point. Still, this is a great game for me, I could not prise myself away from it early on and was only taking breaks because the sheer amount of conversations going on could get fairly draining after a lengthy session.
If you like turn based tactics, Fire Emblem and relationship building in one neat package, then this is a really easy game to recommend for the long haul. If you only play one game in an entire year, this could probably keep you busy throughout. Definitely check this one out, but turn that difficulty up!

- Whispers of a Machine

- Point and click adventure
- 6/10 Decent
A futuristic world where you play as Special Agent Vera Englund. She’s been injected with nanite powers, you know the kind, detective vision, super strength, heartbeat monitoring etc. She exists in a world where A.I. is outlawed, and she’s on the case of a serial killer.
Vera’s personality can be influenced by dialogue choices into three areas; Authoritian, Empathic and Analytical. Whichever route you go changes the type of future skills she unlocks from her nanites. It’s all quite good.
You will get some value out of your skills, say, when you’re interviewing a suspect, using the heartbeat monitor can catch them out when they start lying. The detective vision gets a lot of use, finding blood, matching DNA patterns and so on. Again, it’s all rather clever.
At the heart of the investigation, is a conspiracy (what else?) and I find it important to point out here, that this is a somewhat ambitious project for what is apparently quite a small dev team. The result is plenty of replayability; You have three personality types, which unlock various powers, which means you unlock different methods of solving specific crime scenes.
But the cost of this additional scenario creation is that the game’s length has to be shorter than what you typically might expect. Ergo, this one takes place over four fairly short days, which you can crack through in about four or five hours.
This makes it tricky for me to recommend, because how likely you are to replay a game is going to be entirely dependent on how much fun you find it and how engrossing the storyline is. For me, there’s not enough build-up of lore etc, in the world early on to encourage me to dive in repeatedly and I’m not really that drawn into Vera’s tragic loss of her partner, because I’ve no idea who the guy is or what he was like.
It also has some very weird logic at times; for example, despite being the investigative leader of a murder case, the mortician won’t share patient information with you due to ‘patient-doctor confidentiality’, which I think goes out of the window at that point given the person is flipping dead… All in all, it’s okay, but needs more work to take it up another level.

It is fast, furious, gory and ridiculous. Doom is a great shooter that lets you feel like you’re the man. Enemies fear you, you’re overpowered, you’re ridiculous, and its great fun. It looks great, plays great and is pretty much just great.
There’s not really a lot to say about it, it is just you versus demons, that’s it.
Downsides? The game is so fast that the pace can be exhausting. I broke it up into bite size pieces, otherwise I’d just be feeling at Warp 10. I also suffered repeated CTDs in the final level for whatever reason.
Secondly, it’s only great if you’re a fan of shooters, because it’s very much just that. A shooter. There’s not much gimmick or anything else added to the pan, so if you’re not a fan of the fast shooting genre, stay away from it pretty much. If you’re a shooter fan, bump the score up to 9/10.
- Completion 15, 2nd 100%
- Sword Legacy: Omen
- PC
- Turn Based Tactics
- 3/10 Bad
An indie turn-based tactics game focusing on King Arthur, with the ‘twist’ being that the story focuses on the truth rather the legend. Or, as we like to say ‘darker and edgier’ / read: It has swearing in it.
These types of games always build up my anticipation and then soundly disappoint. The dialogue is a combination of cringe and low-tier fan fiction nonsense, but it is the game’s own mechanics that offend. It is slow and cumbersome, with no manual saves permitted. You’re at the mercy of the autosave system, and if you lose a character in a mission you’ve lost them for the rest of the fight. No revives, heals are minimal and the UI isn’t particularly clear as to providing you with immediate threat assessments etc.
There’s also no undo move/action command, which is a crime for this genre in this day and age. And due to the clunky UI, expect to mis click and accidently move 3 action points as you try to select an ability to use. What particularly annoys me though, is the developer’s comments on the forums which seem to be completely oblivious as to what is good game design. Just platitudes of ‘we are researching the feedback’ from what is an especially small player base. Eh, it was never going to improve was it? (For what it’s worth, 60% started the game, but a mere 18% bothered getting to the third fight of the very first chapter going by achievement unlocks – though I know this isn’t a reliable metric, it’s still shockingly bad.)
Oh, and the max resolution is HD, it won’t go up for 4k or anything beyond that, which is a shame.
4/10 is my original score, but I’m going 3 just for the amount of teen-angst dialogue that had me eye-roll so hard I ended up hurting myself.
- Completion 16, early candidate for surprise of the year 2020:
- OPUS: The Day we found Earth
- Exploration / Pixel Hunt
- 8/10 Very Good
I stumbled upon this deep-diving into Steam and I had no expectations whatsoever. This is downright charming and an early contender for a surprise of the year award.
You follow Emeth, a newly created robot! His job is to help his creator Lisa, find Earth. For humanity has spread through the stars and now Earth is merely a myth for their civilization. Lisa and her partner Makoto have been exploring vigilantly for many years now, so to help speed things along Emeth comes into play.
Of course, things go wrong (when do they go right?) and Emeth wakes up alone in the future, content to carry out his singular mission; Find Earth.
Gameplay is limited to looking through a telescope, pixel hunting through the stars. The onboard ship AI will identify planets and other things for you to hunt, providing you with coordinates or beacons to follow. When that fails, you simply have to hazard a guess via following drawn maps. It is all fairly simple, nothing ground-breaking, but it is enjoyable. Every time you identify a planet or galaxy or whatever, you’re prompted to name it, which I suck at.
There’s a short storyline here as well, Emeth and his ship AI companion battle together to figure out why he’s all alone and where Earth is. It’s an interesting dynamic, which I think might be a polarising aspect of the game for one reason; Emeth is programmed as if he is a child. He can be so single-minded, clueless and yet absolutely adorable that sometimes you can really love the little shit, and other times you just want to punt him out of the airlock when he has a robo-tantrum.
Still, this is downright cute and adorable. A chillax game that keeps things relatively simple. There are two difficulty modes; a Normal mode and a story mode which spams you with hints if you hate pixel-hunting. There’s also a post-game free exploration mode, that comes with Free DLC side-episodes that offer up tidbits of lore, but they’re purely optional. It’ll take an hour and half or two hours to finish at a reasonable pace, if you skip most side stuff, you’ll finish around 75% of the game. For the price it’s at (£2 on sale), there’s really no risk in giving this little game a go. Try it.
That's my 16 of the month done, some stinkers in there and equally, some beautiful games as well. Plenty hitting the 8/10 category, which is always good.
